Midwife: Work with a CNM

Certified Nurse Midwife

Care for Her offers a team-based practice where certified nurse-midwives work in partnership with physicians and health educators to provide patients with the best possible care. A certified nurse-midwife (CNM) is different from a lay midwife. CNMs combine the best of two worlds: advanced clinical training with a caring, holistic approach.

CNM scope of practice

According to the American College of Nurse-Midwives, A nurse-midwife is trained to be responsible for primary care, gynecologic and family planning services, pre-pregnancy care, care during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, care of the normal newborn during the first 28 days of life, and treatment of male partners for sexually transmitted infections.

A midwife conducts physical examinations; independently prescribes medications; admits, manages, and discharges patients when they require hospital care; orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests; and orders medical devices, durable medical equipment, and home health services as needed.

Midwife Services

A certified nurse-midwife works closely with OB/GYNs to assure that patients with complicated or unusual conditions receive appropriate care. Care for Her employs midwives and obstetricians to care for women of all ages and stages. They provide well-woman care, full-scope gynecology, birth control, treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, prenatal care, menopausal care, and more.

Care for Her has offices in Ukiah, Willits, and Lakeport. Babies are delivered at Adventist Health Ukiah Valley, which offers private Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Post-Partum rooms. This means patients do not have to move from room to room through their birthing experience.

Patient-centered care

Over time, medicine has changed and at Care for Her we’ve been ahead of the curve. For a decade or more, we’ve been working collaboratively with patients and a team of healthcare professionals who bring diverse perspectives, along with their experience and skill for the good of the patient.
