Spring
During spring, the valley erupts in new life with white pear tree blossoms, vibrant greed budding grape vines, and pink tulip trees. Cool mornings give way to warmer afternoons, and baseball fans head to the Little League fields to cheer for their favorite teams.
Summer
From July through September, our days usually range from 90º – 100º with little or no rain—perfect for a day at the lake or a walk through shaded redwood forests. In the evening, a wonderful coastal breeze comes over the western mountains to cool things off, so bring a light wrap if you plan to be out late.
Fall
Fall begins in October when the rain returns and the grape harvest is in. Many fall days begin with low-lying fog that burns off by mid-morning, leaving the rest of the day cool but with plenty of sunshine. We get almost 40 inches of rain a year, but enjoy an average of 215 sunny days a year. Local landscape photographers love this time of year, especially when they’re lucky enough to capture one of our many rainbows.
Winter
Winter temperatures are fairly mild, with highs between 55-65º and lows in the 30s or 40s most days. Although the Ukiah Valley only gets a light dusting of snow from time to time, if you enjoy the snow, you won’t have to drive far. The hills overlooking Ukiah frequently get snow during the winter.
Education
Public School
Ukiah Unified School District serves more than 6,700 students in Ukiah, Redwood Valley, Calpella, Talmage, and Hopland with education from preschool through adulthood.
The district has six elementary schools, two middle schools, a comprehensive high school that serves approximately 1,600 ninth through twelfth graders, as well as a continuation high school.
The majority of teens in the Ukiah Valley attend Ukiah High School, which boasts a 60-acre campus with an outdoor swimming pool, a lighted athletic stadium, and a large hall for music and drama productions. Student scores on college entrance exams and the California Assessment Test are well above the State average.
Charter Schools and Private Schools
In addition to Ukiah Unified schools, Ukiah offers charter schools and private schools. Charter schools include River Oak, Redwood Academy and Tree of Life. Private schools include a Buddhist school: Instilling Goodness Elementary, a Catholic School: Saint Mary of the Angels, an Adventist school: Ukiah Junior Academy, a Christian school: Cornerstone School, and a Waldorf School: Mountain Meadow Waldorf.
Mendocino College
Mendocino College is a remarkable resource for such a small, rural locale. The main campus is located in Ukiah with satellite campuses in Lakeport, Willits, and Fort Bragg.
Many of the 800 full-time students complete their first two years of study at Mendocino College and then transfer as juniors to the California State system, University of California system, or to other public and private four-year institutions across the United States.
Total college enrollment is close to 5,000. Students from all walks of life take advantage of the associate degree programs or certificates of achievement in a wide range of vocational, technical, and service fields for those who want to enter the job market. We work in partnership with the college to support their nursing students.
Recreation
Ukiah offers many outdoor activities for children and adults. For children, Ukiah offers all sorts of sports, including soccer, basketball, baseball, softball and martial arts.
City parks offer a municipal pool, a play area with new playground equipment, and a bandstand for summer concerts. Low Gap Park includes a dog park, miles of trails, an archery range and a disk golf course. Lake Mendocino and local national forests offer boating, camping, hiking, water skiing, fishing, horseback riding, mushrooming, bird watching, and excellent mountain biking recreation.
Culture and Community
Ukiah has more cultural and arts entertainment than many cities its size, including musical concerts, dances, and plays–plus a six-theater movie complex with first-run movies. The Ukiah Symphony, the Ukiah Concert Series, the Mendocino College Theater and Dance Programs, the Ukiah Players Theatre, and the Summer Concert in the Park Series all offer excellent entertainment. In addition, local wineries like Nelson Vineyards and Parducci Vineyards host fun summer concerts.
Ukiah also offers fun community events. Car racing fans can enjoy Saturday night races at the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds. Pumpkin Fest in October is a weekend event celebrating Halloween with games and activities for all ages. In May is the Human Race, a collaborative community fundraiser that supports charities by raising funds and building community awareness. The community gathers for Pastels in the Park to watch local artists create beautiful masterpieces in chalk at the park in downtown Ukiah. No matter your age or interests Ukiah has something for everyone.
